The 11th Annual Blue Water Fishing Classic is made possible through a host of generous sponsors in partnership with the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department and the Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade. The family fishing tournament is a South Florida staple, open to anglers of all ages and skill levels. Net proceeds from the Blue Water Fishing Classic provide funds for fishing scholarships for disadvantaged youth, and support Miami-Dade parks and parks programming.
The Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department (MDPROS) is the third largest parks system in the country, operating 260 parks and more than 12,825 acres of natural areas. Its treasures include six marinas, five golf courses, Zoo Miami, Deering Estate at Old Cutler, Trail Glades Gun Range, and of course, a diverse system of neighborhood and regional parks serving 2.5 million residents and 10 million annual visitors. MDPROS prides itself on excellence having reached 100% of national accreditation standards. MDPROS has received the National Recreation and Park Association's National Gold Medal Award three times, and in 2009 was awarded the prestigious Florida Governor's Sterling Award for excellence in management and operations.
The Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade, a 501(c)3, supports MDPROS in its mission to create outstanding recreational, natural and cultural experiences for this and future generations. Monies raised through fundraising and membership help provide recreational scholarships for disadvantaged children; support health and wellness initiatives for people of all ages; fund recreational and community programs, including disability services; and further the Open Space Master Plan (OSMP) initiatives. The OSMP is a 50-year vision for the development and stewardship of parks and open space which seeks to better connect communities through a system of parks, public spaces, natural and cultural areas, greenways, waterways and streets creating a greener, healthier, more economically vibrant Miami-Dade.
